Mego Spider-Man 8 Inch Action Figure Set 2 Brings Back Four Marvel Classics

Mego figures have always had a certain charm. The chunky bodies, fabric costumes and slightly unusual proportions are part of what makes them so recognisable. They don’t look like modern Marvel figures, and that’s exactly the point.

The new Mego Spider-Man 8 Inch Action Figure Set 2 continues that tradition, bringing together Symbiote Spider-Man, Doctor Octopus, Rhino and Mysterio in a four-pack inspired by the classic World’s Greatest Super-Heroes collection.

There’s plenty of retro appeal here, but is the set worth $100?

Four Figures, Four Classic Looks

This second Spider-Man Mego set has a strong selection of characters, although some work better in the classic format than others.

mego spider-man set 2 Symbiote Spider-Man

Symbiote Spider-Man is a particularly good choice. The black costume is simple, with the large white spider emblem doing most of the work. It’s a design that suits Mego’s fabric clothing rather well.

mego spider-man set 2 Doctor Octopus

Doctor Octopus has that unmistakable comic book appearance, complete with his mechanical arms. He’s probably the figure I’m most interested in seeing out of the packaging, particularly how well those arms hold their positions.

mego spider-man set 2 Rhino

Rhino looks suitably bulky, although the traditional Mego body means he doesn’t have quite the size advantage you might expect. That slightly awkward look is part of the appeal for some collectors.

mego spider-man set 2 Mysterio

Mysterio might be the most interesting visually. His fishbowl helmet, green costume and purple cape make him stand out from the others.

None of these are trying to compete with modern Marvel Legends figures for realistic sculpting. They’re deliberately old-fashioned.

Classic Mego Construction and Accessories

Each Spider-Man 8 inch Mego figure features 26 points of articulation and a removable stretch fabric costume with printed details.

That’s considerably more movement than collectors might expect from the original 1970s figures, although the fabric costumes will naturally affect how some poses look. The promotional images suggest the company has captured the traditional look quite well. However, it’ll be interesting to see how the costumes fit on the finished figures, particularly around the shoulders and joints.

Fabric clothing can look excellent when fitted properly, but loose stitching and uneven printing can make a noticeable difference. At least the figures have the correct retro appearance. Trying to modernise them too much would rather defeat the purpose.

A Second Set That Builds on Mego’s Marvel Collection

The original Spider-Man World’s Greatest Super-Heroes Mego collection dates back to the 1970s, when eight-inch figures with removable costumes were a major part of the action figure market.

This new set follows the earlier Disney Store release featuring Spider-Man, Green Goblin, Lizard and Electro. Together, the two sets create a decent Spider-Man collection, although it’s a shame collectors can’t choose individual characters.

The packaging is another strong point. Each figure has its own vintage-style window box, with all four housed inside a larger display case. There’s also a metallic collector coin featuring Spider-Man artwork and the Mego logo.

That makes the collection appealing to collectors who prefer keeping their figures boxed.

It’s also an interesting contrast to modern releases such as the Marvel Legends Secret Wars Spider-Man Alien Costume, which takes a more modern approach to the classic black suit.

Is the Four-Pack Worth $99.99?

At $99.99, you’re paying roughly $25 per figure.

That’s not unreasonable for an eight-inch licensed figure with fabric clothing, accessories and individual packaging. The problem is having to buy all four. If you’re collecting the Mego Marvel range, this is a useful way to add several important characters. But if you only want Mysterio or Doctor Octopus, the price becomes harder to justify.

Collectors who prefer detailed sculpting and more dynamic posing might find something like the Marvel Legends Spider-Man Noir more appealing.

Personally, I like the character selection, especially Mysterio and Doctor Octopus. Both suit the slightly quirky Mego style. The $100 price isn’t terrible, but I would much rather have the option of buying the figures separately.

For anyone building a retro Marvel collection, though, this second set makes a lot of sense.
