Three light-up weapons in a figure standing just under five inches tall? That’s quite a lot of kit to squeeze into one release.

Hiya Toys has revealed its Exquisite Basic MegaMan.EXE figure from Mega Man Battle Network, and it’s the weapon system that interests me most. Rather than giving us a basic figure with a few spare hands, Hiya has packed in several ways to recreate the character’s attacks.

A Different Look for Mega Man
Anyone familiar with Mega Man Battle Network will recognise this design straight away.
MegaMan.EXE is the digital partner of Lan Hikari, known as a NetNavi. Together, they battle viruses and other threats inside the game’s networked world.

The Hiya Toys MegaMan.EXE figure captures his slimmer, more streamlined appearance rather than the bulkier armour found on some other versions of Mega Man. Standing approximately 12.5 cm (4.9 inches) tall, he has the familiar blue and black colour scheme, yellow armour details and large boots.

The proportions look good in the promotional images. His helmet and shoulders have the right shape, while the smaller waist helps capture the character’s game design.
The paint also looks tidy, particularly around the helmet and chest. However, these are promotional images, so we’ll need to see production figures before judging the final finish.
Three Weapons That Actually Light Up
This is where the Exquisite Basic MegaMan.EXE figure gets interesting.

Hiya includes three interchangeable weapons: the Cannon, Mega Buster and Sword. Each has its own magnetic light-up function, activated using a separate Hiya badge. I like this approach. Having lighting built into all three weapons gives collectors more choice, rather than making one accessory the main attraction.

There are also three alternative face plates alongside the standard expression, six interchangeable hands and two firing effects. That’s a useful selection of accessories for recreating different attacks.
The figure also has magnetic feet and comes with a display base. Both should help when posing him in more dramatic positions.
I’d particularly like to see how well the Sword works with the lighting activated. It could make for a great action pose, provided the arm joints can support it.
Small Figure, Plenty of Questions
At $54.99, the Hiya MegaMan.EXE action figure isn’t exactly cheap for something under five inches tall.

However, there is quite a bit included for the money. The weapons, lighting system and interchangeable parts make the price easier to understand. It’s certainly more interesting than paying the same amount for a basic figure with little beyond spare hands. My main concern is articulation. The promotional images suggest a decent range of movement, but figures with large boots and armour around the shoulders can sometimes struggle with more extreme poses.

The magnetic feet should help with stability, although they’ll need a suitable metal surface to work.
I’m also curious about the long-term reliability of the lighting system. Three separate illuminated weapons sound great, but I’d want them to be easy to use without constantly fiddling with the accessories.
These are things we won’t know properly until the finished figure is in collectors’ hands.
Another Direction for Hiya’s Mega Man Range
Hiya has already been building its Mega Man collection with releases such as the Mega Man X Max Armor figure and the much larger Sigma action figure.

MegaMan.EXE takes the range in a different direction. At 12.5 cm, he’s noticeably smaller than many of the Mega Man X releases, so collectors shouldn’t expect everything to match perfectly in height.
Still, I quite like the idea of displaying the different versions together. Their designs are distinct enough to make an interesting collection. For me, the biggest attraction here is the selection of illuminated weapons. Hiya could easily have included one light-up Mega Buster and stopped there. Instead, we’re getting three.
If the production quality matches the promotional images and the joints hold up well, this could be a really enjoyable figure to pose and display.
I’d be interested to hear what other collectors think. Is $54.99 reasonable for a smaller figure with three light-up weapons, or would you rather have a larger figure without the electronics?
