MAFEX Bossk Star Wars Figure Finally Builds Out Vader’s Bounty Hunters

Bossk is exactly the sort of Star Wars character I want MAFEX to tackle.

We already get plenty of Jedi, Sith and armoured leads across the hobby. A strange-looking Trandoshan bounty hunter in a yellow flight suit is much more interesting. The new MAFEX Bossk Star Wars figure also gives Medicom another chance to build out the bounty hunter group from The Empire Strikes Back, rather than circling the same main characters.

The catch is the price. Bossk looks good in the promo shots, but at this level I want more than a nice sculpt.

Bossk Looks Like Bossk, Which Is Half the Battle

The head sculpt is where this figure wins me over.

Bossk has one of those designs that can go wrong very quickly. His long snout, heavy brow and reptile skin all need the right shape. Get any of those slightly off and he starts looking like a generic lizard rather than the character from the film.

From these images, the Medicom Bossk MAFEX figure gets much closer than that.

The textured skin looks sharp without becoming too busy, while the flight suit has the slightly scruffy look I expect from Bossk. His proportions also work well. He is meant to look tall and rangy rather than built like a standard human body with a different head stuck on top.

At around 160mm, the Star Wars Empire Strikes Back Bossk figure should also fit naturally with Medicom’s other Star Wars releases.

Two Heads Make More Difference Than Another Blaster

Bossk includes two head parts, interchangeable hands, two blaster rifles and a movable display stand.

The second head is the accessory I care about most. Different expressions can completely change how a creature character displays, especially one with a mouth as distinctive as Bossk’s.

The two rifles seem to mainly offer different strap positions. Useful, yes, but not exactly a huge accessory loadout.

Articulation looks promising in the photos. Medicom appears to have kept plenty of movement through the arms and legs without chopping up the flight suit too badly. The real test will be the hips, shoulders and neck. Those areas need enough range to stop Bossk looking stiff when holding his rifle.

These are still promotional sample images, though. I would not judge joint tightness, paint consistency or final QC until production figures reach collectors.

The Price Is Harder to Ignore

Anyone searching for the Medicom MAFEX Star Wars Bossk from The Empire Strikes Back price will find an MSRP of ¥17,380, with some US pre-orders sitting around $124.99.

That is serious money for one 6-inch figure.

There is good sculpting here, two heads and the usual MAFEX stand, but the accessory count is not huge. The value really depends on how much you want a high-end Bossk rather than simply a Bossk for your Star Wars display.

That becomes more tempting if you are building Vader’s bounty hunters. Bossk beside Boba Fett immediately makes sense, and collectors following that side of Star Wars may also want to check out our LEGO Star Wars Boba Fett release.

Is Bossk Worth Pre-Ordering?

This is a first look, not a full Medicom MAFEX Star Wars Bossk from The Empire Strikes Back review, so I would keep expectations sensible until the finished figure is out.

What Medicom has shown so far is convincing. The likeness works, the proportions feel right and the second head gives Bossk more personality than a single neutral portrait would.

My hesitation is simply that price. At ¥17,380, the MAFEX Star Wars Bossk action figure needs excellent paint and reliable joints when it reaches collectors.

If you already have a MAFEX Star Wars display and want to build beyond the obvious characters, I can see the appeal straight away. If Bossk would be a standalone purchase, waiting for in-hand photos feels just as sensible.
