Mondo Real Ghostbusters Boogieman Figure Gets a Glow-in-the-Dark Edition

Mondo has found a rather fitting way to bring back one of the creepiest villains from The Real Ghostbusters. The Boogieman is getting a glow-in-the-dark makeover, complete with some unusual accessories that make this more than a simple colour change.

The new Real Ghostbusters Boogieman figure also gives collectors a second chance to own the character without buying the original Egon and Boogieman two-pack.

However, with a $135 price tag, there is still plenty to consider.

A Childhood Nightmare That Actually Glows

The Boogieman was one of the more disturbing villains in The Real Ghostbusters cartoon. His connection to Egon’s childhood fears made him particularly memorable, especially for younger viewers.

Mondo captured that strange appearance with its original figure, and the new glow-in-the-dark Boogieman figure keeps the same exaggerated design. Standing 8.5 inches tall, he has a huge head, wild hair, long arms and that horrible toothy grin.

The proportions are deliberately odd, but that is exactly how the character should look. Trying to make him more realistic would lose much of what made the cartoon version so unsettling.

The biggest change is obviously the glowing finish. From the promotional images, the treatment suits him surprisingly well. This is a character that belongs in the dark, so making him glow feels more appropriate than it might on a regular Ghostbusters figure.

Whether the effect looks as impressive in person will depend on the final finish and how well the material holds its glow.

Some Unexpected Accessories

Rather than filling the box with alternate heads and hands, Mondo has included several smaller characters.

The Boogieman 1/12 scale figure comes with:

• Louie the Gangster, standing 4.3 inches tall
• Louie Monster Form, standing 5 inches tall
• Slimer, standing 3 inches tall
• Boogieman Ghost Trap

The two Louie figures are particularly interesting. They reference the episode They Call Me MISTER Slimer!, giving collectors something different from the usual Ghostbusters equipment.

Slimer also receives a new sculpt based on that episode. I like this approach. These smaller characters help build out the cartoon collection without requiring another expensive full-sized release.

The Ghost Trap is another nice touch, particularly for anyone planning to display Boogieman alongside Egon. There is also new packaging inspired by the Ghostbusters’ Containment Unit, which should appeal to collectors who prefer keeping their figures boxed.

Is the Glow-in-the-Dark Version Worth $135?

This is where things get interesting. Mondo’s original Egon and Boogieman Collector’s Pack included both characters, while this limited edition concentrates on Boogieman and his smaller companions.

At $135, you are paying quite a lot for a character that has already been released. However, the glow treatment, exclusive accessories and new packaging give this version its own appeal.

For collectors who missed the original, this could be the more practical option if Boogieman was the character they wanted. Anyone who already owns him will have a harder decision. Is the glowing finish enough to justify buying another?

There is also the usual question of articulation and quality control. The character’s unusual proportions look excellent, but they could make balancing and posing him more difficult. Until the finished figure is in collectors’ hands, that is something worth keeping in mind.

Another Strange Addition to Mondo’s Ghostbusters Collection

Mondo has been doing a good job exploring the stranger side of The Real Ghostbusters.

The recently revealed Louis Tully and Grundel figure set is another example of the company looking beyond the main team.

This Real Ghostbusters glow in the dark Boogieman continues that approach, although I think it works best as an alternative to the original rather than an essential upgrade.

Personally, I prefer the regular colours for accuracy, but I can see the appeal of displaying this version in a darkened room. The $135 price is difficult to ignore, especially if you already own Boogieman. Still, the unusual accessories make it a more interesting release than a basic glow-in-the-dark repaint.

Would you choose this version over the original, or is the glow effect not enough to tempt you into buying him twice?
