Mondo 200X Mer-Man Figure Brings Four Faces of Evil

Mer-Man has never been the most intimidating of Skeletor’s henchmen. Depending on the version, he can look more like an angry fish than a dangerous underwater warrior.

Masters of the Universe 200X - Mer-Man

The 200X cartoon changed that, giving him a much fiercer appearance. Now the Mondo 200X Mer-Man figure takes that design and gives collectors four different portraits, a selection of weapons and a detailed display base. At $110, there is plenty here to examine.

Four Faces Give Mer-Man Some Personality

One of the strongest features of this release is the choice of heads.

You get neutral, angry and worried expressions, plus a portrait based directly on the 200X cartoon. That last one is particularly interesting. It gives collectors the chance to recreate the animated character rather than sticking with Mondo’s more detailed interpretation.

The different expressions also suit Mer-Man’s personality. He might command the oceans of Eternia, but things rarely go his way when Skeletor’s plans fall apart. The worried expression is a nice touch.

Looking at the promotional images, the sculpt captures the sharp features and aquatic design that made the 200X version so distinctive. The textured skin and exaggerated facial features give him a suitably unpleasant appearance.

The paintwork looks carefully applied in the photographs, although we will need to see production figures before judging the final finish.

Weapons, Crystal and an Underwater Display

The Mondo Mer-Man action figure stands 6.75 inches tall, putting him at a similar height to Teela in the company’s 1/12 range. His accessory selection is fairly generous.

There is a trident with a separate energy blast attachment, a sword, four interchangeable hands and the Coridite Crystal.

The trident is probably my favourite part of the package. Adding the blast effect gives Mer-Man a more aggressive display option, rather than simply having him stand with a weapon at his side.

The Coridite Crystal is another welcome addition, bringing a recognisable element from the 200X series into the collection. Mondo also includes an environmental base, figure base and stand.

I like having the choice between a simple standing pose and something more elaborate. A dedicated display base makes particular sense for an underwater character. The main question is how well everything works together.

Mondo has not provided a detailed articulation breakdown. The promotional photographs suggest several posing possibilities, but we cannot yet judge the full range of movement or how securely he holds his weapons.

Building Skeletor’s 200X Army

The Masters of the Universe 200X Mer-Man Mondo release arrives while the company’s smaller-scale collection continues to grow.

That is encouraging for anyone who wants a matching group of 200X characters rather than figures from different manufacturers and styles. Mer-Man should look particularly good alongside Skeletor and Keldor.

Our Mondo 200X Keldor figure guide covers another villain with four portraits and character-specific accessories.

Mer-Man 200X Masters of the Universe

There is something appealing about this approach. Instead of simply reproducing the classic toys, Mondo is building around the designs and memorable moments of the animated series.

Mer-Man also adds some welcome variety. His unusual proportions, textured skin and aquatic weapons should contrast nicely with the armour and swords of other characters.

Is Mer-Man Worth $110?

This is where things become a little more difficult. At $110, Mer-Man costs considerably more than a typical mass-market six-inch action figure.

The four portraits are a strong selling point, especially because they offer genuinely different expressions. The weapons, energy effect and environmental base add useful display options too.

However, anyone expecting a highly articulated action figure should be cautious until we see the finished product. The sculpt has plenty of detail, but that does not automatically mean the joints will move freely. Paint quality and how securely the accessories fit will also matter.

For collectors already investing in Mondo’s 200X range, this looks like a convincing addition. If you only collect the occasional Masters of the Universe figure, $110 is harder to justify.

Final Thoughts

I think Mondo has made a good choice by giving Mer-Man several expressions instead of concentrating entirely on weapons.

The worried head brings some personality, the cartoon portrait respects the original animated design, and the Coridite Crystal is a nice reference for 200X collectors. For me, the trident effect and environmental base are what make the package interesting.

The price is still a serious consideration. But if Mondo can deliver the paint and sculpt quality shown in these promotional photographs, this could be one of the better villain releases in its growing 1/12 collection.
