MOTU Origins Deluxe Laser Light Skeletor Brings Back a Vintage Rarity

Some vintage Masters of the Universe figures are difficult enough to find, but Laser Light Skeletor is in another league. Released towards the end of the original toy line, he has become one of those figures many collectors know about but few actually own.

Now Mattel is giving him another outing with the MOTU Origins Deluxe Laser Light Skeletor, complete with glowing red eyes and a light-up hand.

The new figure looks faithful to the original, although there are a couple of things worth considering before spending your money.

Bringing Back a Rare Skeletor

The original Laser Light Skeletor appeared in 1988, near the end of the vintage Masters of the Universe range.Unlike the standard Skeletor, this version came dressed in elaborate armour, with a dark cape and electronic light-up features.

It was a striking departure from the familiar blue and purple figure, and its limited distribution helped make it a particularly desirable vintage release. Rather than changing the design completely, Mattel has recreated that unusual look in Origins form.

The new figure has the familiar blue skull face, bronze-coloured armour and deep red cape. The sculpted chest details look particularly good, and the overall proportions suit the classic 5.5-inch Origins scale.

It’s certainly a more interesting choice than another standard Skeletor repaint.

We’ve already seen Mattel experimenting with the character through releases such as Gym Bro Skeletor, but this one has proper vintage history behind it.

The Light-Up Features Are the Main Attraction

The big selling point is the electronics. The Masters of the Universe Laser Light Skeletor figure has glowing red eyes and an illuminated right hand, bringing back the feature that made the original so distinctive. Mattel has also included a translucent red Havoc Staff, which works nicely with the glowing hand.

The figure stands 5.5 inches tall and features 16 points of articulation. There’s a removable fabric cape rather than a solid plastic one. That’s a sensible choice, especially for a figure with bulky armour. It should give collectors more freedom when arranging the cape. You also get a mini comic and window-box packaging.

Based on the promotional images, the paintwork and sculpted armour details look promising. However, we’ll need to see production figures before judging the final finish and quality control.

Will the Electronics Limit Articulation?

This is my main concern. Mattel lists 16 points of articulation, but the light-up electronics could affect the right arm.

That might mean less movement than you’d normally expect from an Origins figure, particularly around the shoulder or elbow. It’s not necessarily a deal-breaker. Electronic figures often involve compromises, and I’d rather have a working light-up feature than a decorative imitation.

Still, at $33, I’d want the arm to have enough movement to create a few decent poses. The figure’s actual range of movement will be worth checking once collectors have it in hand.

Is Laser Light Skeletor Worth $33?

At $33, Laser Light Skeletor costs more than a regular Origins figure, although the working electronics help explain the higher price. You’re getting glowing red eyes, an illuminated hand, detailed armour, a fabric cape and a translucent Havoc Staff. That’s a reasonable amount of detail for the money.

There’s also the appeal of finally owning a modern version of a figure that can be difficult and expensive to find in vintage condition. Anyone building a classic-inspired Origins collection will probably appreciate this release more than someone who just wants another Skeletor.

The Mattel Creations exclusivity is less appealing. Club Grayskull members get first access on October 12, leaving everyone else hoping there’s stock available the following day.

Mattel has continued expanding Masters of the Universe with releases such as the Origins Cartoon Collection 200X Wave 3, but recreating these unusual vintage figures is an area I’d particularly like to see explored further.

Final Thoughts

I’m pleased Mattel has brought Laser Light Skeletor back.

The original is a fascinating piece of MOTU history, and the new version looks like a faithful recreation without losing the modern Origins proportions. My only real hesitation is the possible restriction in the right arm. If Mattel has managed to balance the electronics with useful articulation, this could be one of the more interesting Skeletor releases in the line.

At $33, I think the price is reasonable for what you’re getting, especially when you consider how expensive the vintage original has become. For collectors who have always wanted Laser Light Skeletor, this could be a much more affordable way to add him to their collection.
